Urban Tree Connection’s Groundskeeper Job Description
Commitment: 10 hours weekly
I. Job Description: The UTC Groundskeeper will be responsible for assisting the Community Land Coordinator and the Farm Manager in the basic maintenance of all UTC sites. Basic maintenance primarily includes weed whacking, mowing, and clearing brush, but will also include laying mulch, trash removal, and other duties as assigned. Although the Groundskeeper’s time will be split between the UTC’s farm and community land sites, this position reports to the Community Land Coordinator.
II. Roles & Responsibilities
Attend a training with the Community Land Coordinator and Farm Manager to establish familiarity with all relevant UTC sites, equipment, and infrastructure.
Work with the Community Land Coordinator to maintain both the appearance and functions of all UTC sites by weed whacking, mowing, cutting out brush, laying mulch, removing trash, and other similar tasks as assigned.
Report any problems with UTC sites to the Community Land Coordinator, such as dumping, vandalism, dangerous animals or insects, dead trees, or anything else that threatens the health and safety of the site and its neighbors.
Report any malfunctions with UTC equipment (ex. weed trimmers, mowers, loppers), including shortages (ex. low fuel) to the Community Land Coordinator in a prompt and timely fashion.
Establish familiarity and rapport with community members around UTC sites. Channel requests or inquiries about the sites and its uses to the Community Land Coordinator in a prompt and timely fashion.
III. Skills & Abilities
Ability to operate motorized equipment such as a weed trimmer or lawn mower.
Ability to use nonmotorized equipment such as loppers and pruning saws.
Ability to work independently or in groups.
Willingness to learn and enthusiasm for food justice / agriculture
Respect for people of all cultures and backgrounds
IV. Compensation: This position pays $10 per hour, for up to 5 hours per week from June 2018 through November 2018. Weekly schedules will be determined by the Community Land Coordinator based on site needs and the Groundskeeper’s availability.
VI. Work Conditions & Physical Requirements: This position involves outdoor work in varying weather conditions (hot, rain, etc.); it is physically demanding, requiring the ability to stand, and lift heavy (40lbs.) items on regular basis. This position may require working evenings and weekends throughout the season.
